BREYER supplies Calendering Technology to V4Smart
High-Performance Cells “Made in Germany”
A German High-Tech Project
With the founding of V4Smart, a joint venture between Porsche AG and VARTA AG, Germany has taken another step toward high-performance battery cells. V4Smart produces cylindrical lithium-ion cells for high-performance applications—including sports cars and hybrid models. The goal is to manufacture cells that deliver extremely high power densities while meeting the highest quality standards.
With production sites in Ellwangen and Nördlingen, Germany, a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility—largely digitized and automated—was established in a very short time. This project demonstrates that German companies, too, can produce high-performance battery cells on an industrial scale in a short period of time—a true flagship project for the automotive industry.
VARTA Microbattery GmbH served as the general contractor for V4Smart GmbH & Co. KG and Porsche AG, respectively, and was responsible for the complete planning, construction, and commissioning of the electrode and cell production facilities.
BREYER supplies Precision Technology for the Future of Batteries

A particular challenge lay in implementing a comprehensive track-and-trace system.
Every single battery cell is digitally tracked through all process steps via a higher-level control system. Relevant production data is continuously recorded, expanded, and transferred to the next manufacturing step - a central foundation for the highest quality and complete traceability.
Thanks to this technology, V4Smart’s cells can meet the extreme demands of high-performance sports cars. Each cell batch is precisely controlled so that the vehicles can reliably deliver their performance.
BREYER has not only supplied individual machines, but an integrated calendering system that is seamlessly integrated into V4Smart’s digitized manufacturing environment. The combination of German engineering, software-supported automation, and many years of experience in the calendering sector creates a cell production facility that is unparalleled in Europe.
